Greetings, Fellow Motorcyclists!

WOW! Is it HOT this summer or what? I hope you are finding a way to stay cool... On our "Friends of Pete" ride, Bob had an excellent solution--a cool vest--complete with circulating ice water rigged to a cooler. We thought he arrived bringing the beer ;-).

Friends of Pete Ride

Speaking of "Friends of Pete" Ride, we had an excellent weekend helping Pete celebrate his birthday. Not only is Pete an excellent motorcyclist (both street and off-road), but he is has an amazing knowledge of local history, folk lore, flora, and fauna. Here Pete has found and is about to explain one of the local plants found in the Cohutta Wilderness to Lynne of South Carolina.

Stayin' Safe Wisdom

What follows are title quotes of selected articles from our friend and writer of the Stayin Safe articles for 18 years in Rider Magazine. Larry Grodsky certainly had a way with words. You would have to read the entire articles to see just how insightful Larry was.

The American Idiot Tour (A fatal accident can claim any motorcyclist…but it's usually more selective)
Pundits say our country is moving to the right. Is it because we don't know how to turn left??
Make Space, Not War!! You like the folks in your group, but have concerns about their riding? Guess what - you make them nervous, too!
Counting Mississippi's. Good judgment isn't something you're born with, but improving yours is only a matter of seconds.

Fortunately, many of the "Grodsky-isms" are preserved in the book Stayin' Safe: The Art and Science of Riding Really Well compiled and edited by Atlanta Motorcycle Schools own Pete Tamblyn-- also a Senior Instructor with Stayin' Safe. You can purchase Larry's book from, Amazon, or White Horse Press.

Remember that we are no more armed because we have possession of a firearm than we can be a musician just because we own a piano. There is no point in having a gun if you are not capable of using it skillfully with the proper mindset. Get TRAINING and PRACTICE, PRACTICE & PRACTICE!!!!!!!!!!

Motorcycle Fatalities Increase

Recently I had a conversation with an older "biker" who told me that in order to avoid a collision he would "dump his bike to avoid the crash". Sounds to me like a "crash" in the making for this fellow. How many different versions of "I had to lay it down" have you heard?

We just returned from a week in Florida and most riders were not wearing helmets. The majority were male (although some were female) and middle aged. So these male baby boomers continue to die in record numbers on big motorcycles they may no longer have the agility to handle... Think about it and let's not allow this to be one of our readers some day!! Be more selective :-).

Please take the time to listen to this video from PBS--the link was long, so I have created TinyURL links: or

Conclusion: Riders in those states without helmet laws are six times more likely to die in a crash than in states with helmet laws.

Elements of Shooting Skills

There are three elements of shooting skills - marksmanship, gun handling, and mindset. Gun handling is the element that gives us the most trouble. At shooting ranges I frequent, I see the way people handle their firearms. It's enough to scare the hell out of us!! It would seem that while a great many shooters understand the four basic rules of safe gun handling, they seem to think that the rules only apply on the range when under supervision. These rules apply at all times and in all circumstances!!!

Rule 1 - All guns are always loaded.
Rule 2 - Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not prepared to destroy.
Rule 3 - Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
Rule 4 - Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

SB301 Street Smarts

Have you been putting that refresher/advanced class off?? As you know, JoAnna and I are strong proponents of "Continuing Education". Continuing to learn and focus under the eye of a professional trainer is the key to becoming a better rider and enjoying your ride so much more… The following is a brief description of our street course with Ken. Bike to bike communication is used to facilitate coaching while on the move… Oh, and you will truly enjoy this ride into the North Georgia hills!

Street Smarts is a street riding course designed to enable the experienced motorcyclist to obtain supervised "real world" traffic experience on their own motorcycles. In the classroom portion of the course, the topics of protective clothing, lane positioning, road hazards, and emergency and cornering situations are reviewed. Discussion also includes changing weather, varying road/traffic conditions, intersection hazards, and interstate and mountain road riding. Depending on the customer's skill level, the riding portion of this course may begin on a closed course with practice in cornering and stopping techniques. For the public street portion of the class, riders may choose between urban, suburban, and rural mountain riding. The mountain riding session begins on country lanes, and is designed to improve rider confidence by progressively introducing roads with a greater variety of curves and elevation changes.

If you are ready to pick your skills up a level--or simply have a professional review the "habits" you have acquired since your last training, take a close look at Course 301. Remember repeat customers always get a 10% discount.

And, if you are an MSTA member (, you could be rewarded with a $100 check from the Dan Clark Safety Program at next year's STAR. Read about this year's STAR below...

MSTA STAR12 in Avon, CO

JoAnna and I were in Colorado recently riding in (real) mountains and off road (dual sports). The temperatures were uncommonly warm for that time of year. For example, one day we were on I-70 heading West. Temperature was 93 when we left the interstate. Within a very short time we were over 11,000 feet on a mountain pass and the temperature had dropped to a cool 63 degrees. Pays to dress for the ride!!!!!!!!!! We were attending the MSTA STAR annual rally.

Oh, and we were privileged to have put on one of our motorcyclist and Concealed Carry Seminars while there.
